Overnight tour to Katse Dam leaving from Clarens

Please note all activities are ‘weather permitting’ & Passports are required.

Designed for those who wish to take a more leisurely trip to Katse Dam, Maluti Tours offers an overnight stay near the Dam. On this tour we are able to show you more of the area and add in a couple of visits while we are there. Valid passports are required and for travellers under 18yrs the ‘un-abridged’ birth certificate is required in addition to their passport.

Depart from the Square in Clarens at 8.00am. Drive along a part of the scenic Maloti Route to reach the border gate where you’ll complete passport control and enter Lesotho.

Travel part of the main road to Maseru, turning for the mountains once you leave the town.  Here the road surface improves and is tar all the way. Enjoy the beautiful scenery on this route with its waterfalls and rivers. We travel slowly so that you can enjoy the views and take photos at safe places along the route. We don’t mind pulling over for that really special photo.

Arrive in the Katse area by making a visit to the Highest Botanical Gardens in Africa. This is situated high above the dam itself. It is home to the natural plants which were removed from the area that the dam now covers. The plants in question would have been lost forever had they not been carefully removed and nurtured at a similar altitude. Many of the plants are not seen anywhere else in Africa. Enjoy a walk through this very natural garden to see the rare plant life that is indigenous to the area.

Move on to the Dam Wall and enjoy the magnificent views. Breathe in the fabulous mountain air and relax as we explore the area while taking photos.

If at all possible, due to time schedules, we will attend the afternoon Tunnel Walking Tour. This is a guided tour through the inner passages of the dam wall itself. It is a well lit area and is wheelchair accessible. You will learn a lot of facts about the Dam and the way it works, about their plans for the new Dam which will be linked to Katse and just absorb a lot of information that you normally do not come across. It is a very informative tour. Unfortunately, no cameras are allowed inside.

Following the tour we make our way to our accommodation to relax. Here you are at leisure for the remainder of the day.  Discuss with your driver what you wish to do in the morning and allow him to advise you of any other interesting places that could be visited whilst in the area.

No visit to Katse is complete without a drive over the Dam Wall. At some stage during the visit, we will take this amazing drive so that you can view the Dam from this vantage point and also see the water going down river as it spills from the Dam. It is a very memorable experience.

Arrival in Clarens is rather unpredictable, but safe to say it will be late afternoon most likely.
