Fouriesburg half day Tour: Historic Union House & Medieval Destiny Castle

Join us on a tour of one of the most epic & different destinations in the area – Union House & Destiny Castle.  The history of Union House is very interesting & is in contrast with the iconic Destiny Castle, which is a copy of a medieval castle set on the top of a sandstone mountain towering over all beneath it.  The half day tour leaves Clarens at a comfortable time & heads to Fouriesburg & takes a short left to Union House where we enjoy an informative tour of this historic home. The house was originally built in the 1870’s and was burnt down twice during the Anglo Boer war. It was beautifully reconstructed and restored in the traditional style to commemorate the signature of the Union of South Africa on its front lawn on 31 May 1910. To commemorate this peace between the Boers & British, President Brand of the Free State planted two oak trees on the front lawn to symbolize the Union between Afrikaans and English inhabitants. Today Union House is an exclusive Guest House.

We then take the 4×4 track up the mountain to Destiny Castle, which was built in a medieval style entirely from sandstone & is perched on the top of a sandstone mountain. Building started in the seventies and was finished thirty years later.  It boasts its own runway for its more exclusive clients. After a very interesting guided tour around this very excusive getaway you have the option of enjoying a lunch prepared by the resident Chef, Jonathan in the dining room or on one of the terraces. The cost of lunch & refreshments is for our clients account.

Time permitting we head into Fouriesburg, stopping at Jenlee’s Country Store or into the town for a drink or pub lunch at the Clock & Train Bar in the Fouriesburg Country Inn before heading back to Clarens.
